Darrell Scott "River Take Me"

Monday morning, and I don’t want to break the reverie of the weekend. Not that I actually have a job to report to. Jobs are hard to find, as we all know. So you gotta do what you can. For me, that means making the decision to be self-disciplined every day. I never did like having to punch a clock much, but I do have the utmost respect for people who do what they must, because that is the only way their families will thrive. It is impossible to believe that there just aren’t enough jobs to go around anymore. I would love to see the 10% or 9% of America’s unemployed get back to work, but don’t get me started!

“The river can drown you or wash you clean.” So writes Darrell Scott, of a man out of work, with the rain coming down. His lyrics carry you through all kinds of emotions, just in this one song. It is a thing of wonder to be able to write the way Darrell does. Not to mention to be able to sing and play the way he does, too. There are a smattering of solo tour dates coming, and then more ahead with Band Of Joy. They are all a thing of beauty, and I encourage you to catch this remarkable troubadour in action. Here is a taste, Darrell Scott with one of the songs from his album Theater Of The Unheard. It is the Music Fog version of “River Take Me,” recorded in September at the Americana Fest in Nashville.

Music Fog Marathon In Austin

So we don’t call them showcases (well, we shouldn't), and sure enough, it isn’t official, but the Music Fog cameras will be rolling from Wednesday, March 16th to Saturday, March 19th at Threadgill's South in Austin, Texas. We start when the doors open at 11 am each day, and we get done, well, when we are done. That’s why we call it this one the Music Fog Marathon...it takes a bit of stamina to get through all four days! There will be an abundance of bounty in the music AND the refreshment divisions. And no badges, no admission charges, just great food and fun. Come eat, drink, and be merry!

Music Fog has completed putting our roster together. It is signed, sealed and delivered. We will be filming live performances from the stage in the back room at Threadgill’s South, 301 West Riverside in South Austin. We will have plenty of Aleve® on hand, but just for us, not for you. We were thinking Aleve and 5-hour ENERGY® should be our new sponsors! If you drink 3 of them, that's 15 hours of energy, right?! Now normally, we do our thing behind closed doors; on a bus, in a condo, or some other unpublicized location. But our unofficial program during SXSW® Music week is quite the opposite. We love having company for some chicken fried steak, and cobbler and Blue Bell ice cream, and lest we forget, Threadgill’s is all about eating your vegetables! There are an outstanding amount of them on the menu, and it is not uncommon to have yourself a vegetable plate...pick three or even five! And don’t forget the drinks! There will be booze of pretty colors, and my brown liquor, and Beans' drink of choice, the Skinny Bitch.

But most of all, there will be music. Oh, you can go ahead and count them yourself, but there are 44 bands that will grace the Music Fog stage at Threadgill's. Yup, that's a music marathon! Our schedule and set times are below, and please note that each artist will play a 20 minute set and then clear the stage for the next setup. Can't wait to see you there!

Luke Olson "Everyday"

Today is an homage to love that has been separated; whether by jobs in different cities or by military assignment. It is ever so hard to keep it together when you are not in the same place, but true love and commitment somehow prevails. I want to take a minute to honor our Armed Forces. I saw a mom in the supermarket yesterday with two kids under three years old. She is raising them on her own, as her husband is overseas in Afghanistan. I overheard her story while waiting in line at the checkout. You know we thank our uniform military regularly for their service, as they are easy to spot. But I would like to thank their spouses, too, for doing a heroic job indeed.

Today's song is one from the heart by Luke Olson. He came to visit Music Fog in our temporary studio at the Steamboat Grand during MusicFest last month. He has been performing since the age of eight, singing and playing to appreciative audiences all over Texas with five albums to his credit. One of my favs is his 1999 release Panhandle Sunset, which was produced by the legendary Lloyd Maines. We got to play that one back in the old days at X Country. Today's video is a song from his latest album Red River Blue, love that title! When I checked what we are posting today, the DJ in me starting reeling. How many different songs can you name that are called "Everyday," or have the lyric "Everyday" featured prominently in the song. Let's do an hour's worth! There's Buddy Holly, Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews Band, etc...! We'll get it started with Luke Olson, "Everyday."
