The Defibulators "Ol' Winchester"

This is an homage to the power of plaid in rock and roll. Creedence Clearwater Revival stepped up first in the 60s when they refused to appear in the mode of that day, which included rich fabrics, textures, and dramatic colors. The British bands, especially, draped themselves in velvet, wide wale corduroy, ruffled Edwardian blouses, silk, satin, and brocade. It was 'everything all the time.'  But when CCR played the Fillmore East in New York, they were notable in their simplicity - ragged jeans, hair a little too long over the ears, and plaid flannel. OMG, it was about the music! Plaid returned with Seattle Grunge, an era that focused on the music again. Remember, that was when hair bands had taken things way too far. And plaid and flannel are back in a big way today. Isn't it interesting that it seems to reemerge as a centering agent? Music Fog has lost count of how many deconstructed silhouettes we have filmed.

One of them is the rapidly rising Brooklyn based band The Defibulators. They are getting ready to make their yearly pilgrimage to Austin, TX, the home of the scruffy, during SXSW for their second annual Brooklyn Country Cookout. It will feature beer, tons of music and, we bet, plenty of plaid flannel will be in plain view! Of course, there are tour dates on the way down south. We bring you one from their Corn Money CD, this version recorded during September's Americana Music Festival in Nashville. "Ol' Winchester," featuring guns and a bit of plaid flannel. What could be better?

Paul Thorn "Almost What You Need"

We couldn't be more excited! Next week, we are heading down to the Marriott Shoals Hotel in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for a first for us, as we are doing the production for Paul Thorn as he presents his first ever pay-per-view webcast on January 29th at 8 pm CST! It will be comprised of two sets, the first one is Paul solo, and then after intermission, Paul comes back with his kick ass band: Bill Hinds, Jeffrey Perkins, Michael Graham, and Ralph Friedrichson, the new bass player.

We know, we know, Saturday night is date night and you might be busy, so the thing that is really cool about this event is that it will be available to you until March 1st, to watch as many times as you want! A ticket to view on your computer is only $6.99, and you will receive an email containing full instructions and a link to the live video stream. You will also receive an email reminder on January 29th, the day of the concert. And if you don't or can't watch it live, you can still see it later! Click here to read more about it, and view the "test" video, which means your system is compatible (98% of all computers are).

"Almost What You Need" is from the 2004 album Are You With Me. It is from our most recent tete-a-tete with Paul, during the Americana Music Festival in Nashville this past September. Just Paul and his electric guitar. Sweet magic.

Almost What You Need - Are You With Me?

Hayes Carll "Another Like You"

And...scene. MusicFest at Steamboat Springs is done for another year, and what an amazing time it was. We kiss the mountains and big blue Rocky Mountain sky goodbye, as we try to catch our altitude compromised breath, and center our alcohol infused brains. Good times. It is interesting to me that this music scene, Texas, Red Dirt, and Americana, has expanded so much that it can no longer be contained at one event. What I mean is there are SO many performers now that you can't stage them all in one place. Could take weeks, if you did that actually! It is just exploding.

There were some artists on the MusicFest roster last year that didn't make it this time. Like Hayes Carll, for instance. But never fear, we caught up with him in September during Americana Fest in Nashville, and voila! We have new music for you. Hayes' new CD KMAG YOYO (& other American stories) hits the street on February 15th. There are several ways to pre-order, see each of the bundles and other exclusives at the official Hayes Carll store. If you are lucky enough to have a local radio station that plays Americana you might be hearing music from his new CD any minute. We have an incredible duet for you today at Music Fog, and you'll find the studio version on the new album next month. Here's Hayes and bassist Bonnie Whitmore trading lines on this modern day love song which features one character that watches Fox News, and the other who enjoys MSNBC...as Hayes puts it!
