Fog Is Thick At SXSW

It is year three, as once again Music Fog takes the stage in the Saloon Room at Threadgill's World Headquarters (AKA...the back room, on the stage against the ruby velvet curtains) 301 W. Riverside, in South Austin TX. It is an unofficial showcase so no badges or wristbands are necessary, just a desire to eat some good ol' home cookin', and see some smokin' music. There's no cover charge, and each day's showcase starts late morning and rolls into the early evening.

Music Fog put the four day schedule together, and our cameras will be rolling so we can create gobs of Americana music videos for you to view here at MusicFog.com. Most times we do our thing behind closed doors, but for this gig we invite you to come and hang in the room for our recordings. The Music Fog Motto, after all, is "How Hard Could It Be...?" and the answer, at least when we come to Threadgill's, is "Pretty Damn Easy!" What with onsite parking, air conditioning, any drink of any color that you might want, Southern home-style fare with loads of vegetables, and the ever important indoor plumbing with those fancy new 'no hands' towel machines. I don't know, they just intrigue me! And really, why would you even think of going anywhere else? Start and end times of the sets are listed below! Of course, all times subject to change...but they shouldn't!

Matt Morris "Forgiveness"

Last night, Matt Morris delivered an incredible performance in a duet with Justin Timberlake on the song "Hallelujah." They were featured in the benefit show Hope for Haiti Now, a telethon produced by MTV Networks, which also included Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Madonna and Sting, among others. But the runaway performance of the evening was "Hallelujah" from Justin & Matt. People started to crawl the internet this morning to find out just who this guy was singing with Justin Timberlake. It appears things are suddenly moving very quickly for Matt Morris.

When we invited him onto the Music Fog Showcase at SXSW in Austin last year, he was on the heels of a successful tour with Joan Osborne and had recently released an EP called Backstage at Bonnaroo. We also knew that he was about to record a new project with Charlie Sexton producing. Regardless, it was his voice that earned him a spot on the same stage that day as Ray Bonneville, Chuck Mead, Jason Eady, and Ben Kweller.

Now, fast forward to January 12, 2010. When Everything Breaks Open, the album he was working on, is released. There's a Letterman appearance that goes well. The CBS Morning show. Then a spot on Ellen, which sends the album and two of it's songs into the top spots in iTunes' Singer/Songwriter category. Finally, that amazing performance of "Hallelujah" on the Hope for Haiti Now benefit show. Now that's how you debut an album. Way to go, Matt!

Here's one of the new songs he did for us at Threadgill's---definitely a stripped down version compared to what he recorded for the album. If you like this one, run back to the first song we posted from Matt, too, called "Chief" which is unreleased.

As of tonight, the Hope for Haiti Now charity has raised $57 million and counting. Donate directly by visiting their website hopeforhaitinow.org or by purchasing performances from the telecast. Click the logo below to see the contents of the entire album, or to purchase singles.

porterdavis "Can't Be Satisfied"

Porterdavis I beg to differ. I'm completely satisfied with the unique sound that porterdavis continues to blast out! For what appears to be a stripped down three piece, they always deliver a mountain of healthy tone. If you like any of their tunes that you've caught here in the Fog, you'll LOVE their self-titled album from this past summer...produced by Gurf Morlix. Crank it. Dig it. Repeat.

Let's head back to Threadgill's World Headquarters in Austin during SXSW week 2009. This time around you get to groove on some nice slide work from Dan. I also like how he tries to run Simon out of breath at the end, but the mad harp man just shakes it off! Nice.
