Uncle Lucius "Just Keep Walkin'"

Up and down and around we go. My singular lilac rose, perfectly in bloom from Valentine’s Day, is a delicate and most welcome sight when I am in the kitchen. Just beautiful, these small pleasures. And the large pleasures ain’t bad either! We met our Kickstarter goal, which means the Fog will roll again, into Austin to Threadgill’s for the Spring Music Fog Marathon. I am booking it as we speak. Multi-tasking, actually, listening to my iTunes library while I am watching TV while I am writing, while I am doing the laundry and dishes. Whew.

Today’s video is from a Fog favorite, Uncle Lucius.  They have been chronicled on Music Fog from the beginning of our existence, and close to the start for them too.  It was last year during MusicFest at Steamboat Springs that we filmed this song.  It is an exclusive, and has not yet been released.  In fact, it was so new at the time, that it was named while that session was going on. Pretty cool, huh, watching art get born. If you haven’t seen this band play live yet, you gotta! They will take you on a mighty sweet ride. So herewith, is “Just Keep Walkin’” You gotta, baby!

Eilen Jewell "Only One"

Did we make our Kickstarter goal? YES, by 105%!!! I am a bit bleary eyed this morning from watching the incredible eleventh hour activity last night, as we were coming upon the deadline. It was amazing to sit and watch the community rally. Thanks to each and every one of you for your generous contributions to support our Spring Marathon at Threadgill’s. We are both humbled and thankful. Though it is hard to let go, at some point, you just have to let it fly into the universe and hope for the best.

For three years we have been, for the most part, self-funded to bring you magical Americana moments. Why? Because we believe in this music and these artists. Why else? Because the old music delivery system has broken down. But there is a growing ability to bring the music directly to you. One by one. Person to person. Communication is what it is all about. We have a smoldering torch song for you today, ‘cause we are just in that kind of mood.

Eilen Jewell put this on her Queen of The Minor Key CD in 2011. It is a sultry and noir tune, that could have appeared on a soundtrack to a detective movie in the 50’s. Eilen (pronounced E-lin) brought her ace band; Jerry Miller on electric, Johnny Sciascia playing bass, and Jason Beek on skins and back-up vocals. You can see them in Piermont, NY tomorrow, and there a few dates listed after that.  Here is the delicious, shimmering Music Fog version of “Only One” from our Spring Marathon last year at Threadgill’s in Austin. (And I am booking this year’s as we speak, thanks to all of you!)

Guy Clark "The Cape"

We are just a month out from SXSW descending on Austin, and today is last day of our Kickstarter campaign for this year's Music Fog Marathon.  Kickstarter is an all or nothing proposition.  If we don't hit our total goal, we don't get partial funding (and donors don't get charged).  We're close, but not there yet, so please consider donating a dollar or two to support the broadcast.

SXSW is, in essence, spring break for the tragically hip. Every color hair, every imaginable personal style from the macabre to the flamboyant, visiting this hamlet en masse in March. It’s like the wildflowers of the Texas countryside blooming, only way louder.  Actually, Austin’s population is pretty weird anyway. On a recent trip to the HEB Supermarket at midnight, I saw blue hair (not elderly, but cerulean) red hair (not with freckles, primary color red) and I saw pink hair (not cotton candy but flaming strawberry.) There was a guy in a sugar skull do-rag. There were ghoulish types and bikers and bad-asses of every ilk.

Photo by Senor McGuireAustin is a city that believes in letting its freak flag fly, and that is a wonderful thing.  I wonder how much of these looks are wish fulfillment from childhood. When I was about 7, my favorite article was a turquoise leather bomber jacket. It held magical powers, and I wonder whether that didn’t imprint me in some way as to what my future taste would be. Today’s tune is a throwback to childhood from Guy Clark, who our Nashville Music Fog Marathon at Marathon Recorders during Americana Fest. “The Cape” is a song that you can find on Guy’s most recent album, Songs and Stories.  Patty Griffin does the honors on the Guy Tribute album just out, This One’s For Him. We bring you the Music Fog version today. Oh yeah, and always trust your cape!
