Little Feat "Rooster Rag"

There were pioneers who might not have known it at the time, as they were just following their instincts. People like Gram Parsons and the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, Poco, Pure Prairie League, Goose Creek Symphony, John Fogerty and The Blue Ridge Rangers, all were on the cutting edge. They married country flavors and rock and roll long before the before the Americana tag came into being to define the melding of roots traditions.

Some of these bands continue today, thankfully, and one of them is Little Feat. Though they have been through deaths in the family; first Lowell George, way too young, and then Richie Hayward just a few years ago. Little Feat rocks on - rootsy and funky and real. A couple of Tuesday’s ago, Little Feat released Rooster Rag, their first studio album of new material in nine years. There are new songs from long time band members Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett and a brand new songwriting collaboration between founding Little Feat member Bill Payne and Grateful Dead Lyricist Robert Hunter, who contributed four new songs for this, Little Feat’s fifteenth album of original material. Today’s video is one of the Payne/Hunter co-writes and it is the title track, "Rooster Rag," filmed at the Alley in North Hollywood, California.

Kevin Gordon "Tearing It Down"

Hope you had a nice weekend, and a nice week, for that matter. I must say that I lost track of whether it was a weekday or a weekend somewhere in there, but I went to Fest Out West on Saturday, and that helped set things straight. The event was in two towns in Texas, Kerrville, and then Luckenbach on Saturday. I just attended the daytime show there, and it was a splendid outing under the live oaks with rousing sets from Doug Moreland, Dale Watson, Reckless Kelly and Robert Earl Keen. Kudos to Abbey Road of Luckenbach and John and Robin Dickson from Dickson Productions for a feel good deal. Of course they also do MusicFest at Steamboat Springs, and I am already looking forward to that event in the first part of January, 2013.

Next event is Americana Fest, happening September 12- 15 this year in Nashville. I am looking forward to that too!  When we were there last year, we were busy at Marathon Recorders with three days of amazing artists coming to play for our cameras. Kevin Gordon brought a A-list of players with him; Joe McMahan, Ron Eoff and Paul Griffith. I hope you are hip to Kevin, if not, here is an impressive page of quotes about him

The new album, Gloryland, which came out in February, is his fifth album since he started recording in 1994. Let me tell you there are musical gems in his catalog. Kevin is headed south, and will be playing Threadgill’s WHQ on July 15!  Our featured tune today is earthy and moody. Joe McMahan’s guitar provides the perfect punctuation. Here is “Tearing It Down,” the original of which you can find on the Gloryland album.

Johnny Hickman "Another Road"

Cracker founding guitarist Johnny Hickman put his sophomore solo album, Tilting, out on Tuesday, and I promise you, watching the video for “Another  Road” will indeed make you tilt. Of course, Johnny will be back in the Cracker saddle for a new album to be recorded with David Lowery et al. next year. There will be some solo dates for Johnny this summer, though they will be sandwiched in between the dates for the Barenaked Ladies' "Last Summer on Earth" tour, featuring Cracker, Blues Traveler and Big Head Todd & The Monsters. Now that sounds like fun!

Before we get on with it, I just wanted to take a moment to shine a light on the Colorado and Utah forest fires. Over 10,000 people have been driven from their homes, so help if  you can. The Red Cross is accepting donations. Here is "Another Road," a songwriting collaboration between Johnny Hickman and his longtime friend Chris LeRoy. It was filmed in Northern Colorado by Tomas Herrera. The video features Johnny with Jason Larson, who co-produced the new album. It is summertime, and the great American pastime of driving on the open road awaits! Ready? Here goes…
