James McMurtry "Red Dress"

Today is the last day to donate to our Kickstarter campaign for us to be able to do the Fall Music Fog Marathon in Nashville during the Americana Fest, September 12th - 15th. We wouldn’t have undertaken another campaign if we hadn’t been successful earlier this year. Funny, last time we were on deadline, which was back in March for the Spring Music Fog Marathon during SXSW, we had $4,000 to raise the last afternoon. It became something of my own personal telethon, as I did outreach via email, Facebook, and phone to friends and industry folks, keeping them updated as the goal got closer. We hit it with two hours to spare before the deadline. I do not expect to be doing that this afternoon, however, as we are still so far away. I am sorry that it is not likely to happen, and that Music Fog will not then be able to attend the Americana Conference to film another forty artists. The good news is, though, if you pledged and we don’t make our goal, the money simply reverts back to you. We can’t keep it, wouldn’t want to, either, because we needed the whole sum, $15,000 to be able to travel to Nashville for a week for a crew of five, and have a production budget. Maybe someone will wave a magic wand and make it happen. Ya never know!

One of the most watched artists we have filmed is James McMurtry. He is always in Music Fogs top ten watched videos. We are honored to be given access to capture him, and it happened again during our Spring Marathon at Threadgill’s. I love the way he occupies the narrative, he wears the words he sings, you can see it in his eyes. James is on a western swing of dates. Today we bring you a total classic, “Red Dress,” originally found on the 2002 Saint Mary Of The Woods CD, which I recommend highly. There is also a version of it on Live in Aught-Three. The latter album was re-mastered and reissued since its original 2004 release. We have a solo version from back in March for you today. ”Red Dress.”

Wade Bowen "Say Anything"

I know I know, it is still hot as Hades. Yes, September and Labor Day are approaching, and then the fourth quarter kicks into high gear. I can tell the season is changing from the amount of new music that is slated to come out in the next few months. The Christmas rush is on! At least, in the music industry, this is the time to start putting music out that might become a stocking stuffer. (One for my friend and one for myself!) So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you that we acknowledge the first day availability for the 2013 MusicFest at Steamboat Springs, CO.

Now, for my money, this is the most perfect way to start the year, up in the mountains with friends and family, winter sports, and kick ass music. This year’s event is scheduled for January 5th through 10th. Here is the link.  It is coming up on two years ago that Music Fog was there. We had set up shop at The Steamboat Grand Hotel. We had a connecting room between bedrooms, they call it a parlor. Glory be, we had a kitchen, so we got busy every day feeding the bands the plat du jour; Green Chili Stew, Boeuf Bourguignon, Carnitas.

The music washed over us as we filmed it. It was spectacular. And from that event, we have a Wade Bowen video to bring you today. What a year he has had! The album, The Given, was released in May to roars of approval, and even cross-over radio play for the song “Saturday Night.” Wade, we are so proud of you! You will find the original of “Say Anything,” on that album. Here is the solo acoustic Music Fog version, from January 2011.

White Violet "Lays Around Lazy"

Wow, here in Texas, school is back in. It is not even Labor Day yet! If you love summer, you might be feeling sorrowful to see it go. Those of us that love fall and the change of seasons seem to be quickened by ‘the season’ starting up. The world just feels like it spins faster in the months coming up to the end of the year. Not to mention, when you live in the sun belt, there are weekends galore to keep doing all the outside stuff. Right now, I only go out at night, it is just too hot during the day.

White Violet has todays video, which somehow feels to me like an autumn song. I picture curling up with a book in the upstairs window seat, peering out at leaves falling. White Violet is one of the bands on the new Normaltown label out of Athens, Georgia, an imprint from New West Records.

"Hiding, Mingling," their new album, came out last week. Vaughan Lamb, Brad Elliott, Josh McCauley and Nate Nelson, have a way of taking the songs that Nate has been writing for the last ten years, and turning them into dreamy soundscapes that allow for the mood to encompass you. BTW, there is a limited edition 7inch of this song that can be picked up at White Violet's dates.  Also, you can download it for free at normaltownrecords.com. We filmed White Violet at our Spring Music Fog Marathon at Threadgill’s WHQ in March on Austin. Here is “Lays Around Lazy.”
